About Arborous, LLC

Trees are one of the most important assets on our planet. I don’t believe we would be able to exist here if there weren’t great trees and forests all over the Earth. They simultaneously create and clean air, provide food and homes for millions of species (including our own), improve soil so their offspring and other life can live healthy lives. Our own lives and lives of countless other life forms literally depend on trees, yet as a species we continue to destroy more than we plant every year.

When I first learned how trees work and grow, and how they support life on Earth, I became fascinated and concerned enough to commit my career to planting and caring for them. I created Arborous not just to care for trees, but to help other people understand them, care for them and hopefully protect them. I did not start Arborous to be a “tree service”, I don’t have tree crews to prune or remove trees (but I can point you to some of the best tree services in the area). Arborous is here to provide independent and un-biased science-based information to help clients understand how to best care for trees and why certain arboricultural practices should be used over others. I love trees, and I work hard to understand them and to help my clients do the same.

I am here to speak for the trees…and for you.

About Me

I have spent the last 35 years learning about, planting and caring for trees. In 1993, after graduating from the University of Minnesota with my degree in Urban Forestry, I moved west to Boise, Idaho. There, I spent the next 14 years as a tree inspector, and the following 13 years as the City Forester. After leaving, I opened my own business in Boise, then in Bozeman Montana. I am a Certified Arborist and a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor with the International Society of Arboriculture.

Yggdrasil & Oroborous

The Arborous logo evokes two ancient symbols: Yggdrasil and Oroborous.

Yggdrasil is the mighty tree whose trunk rises at the geographical center of the Norse spiritual cosmos. The rest of that cosmos, including the Nine Worlds is arrayed around it and held together by its branches and roots, which connect the various parts of the cosmos to one another. Because of this, the well-being of the cosmos depends on the well-being of Yggdrasil.

Oroborous is the snake eating its own tail, encircling the roots of Yggdrasil. The symbol likely originated in ancient Egypt, but over the centuries has been adopted by other cultures. In Norse mythology, it is called Jörmungandr, the great serpent encircling the world. According to myth, Odin threw Jörmungandr into the great ocean. He grew so large that he surrounded the Earth, grasping his own tail. It was said that if the World Serpent were to release its tail, Yggdrasil would tremble and Ragnarök (the end of the world) would begin. In more modern times, it has come to symbolize eternal cyclic renewal, a cycle of life, or death and rebirth.

For me, the logo not only symbolizes the cyclical life, death and rebirth of a tree, but the life, death and rebirth of each of us, throughout our lives.
